Integrating 9-5 work lifestyle into Van Life by Peter

During this session, I’ll cover how I was able to support my corporate work while traveling in my rigs. I’ll touch on the conversations you may want to consider, my various setups, what I learned, the challenges I faced and continue to encounter, what’s next and leave room for questions.

Meet the Speaker.

I started my road life journey back in September of 2017. Prior to this year, I knew nothing about adventuring or how to live a sustainable life on the road. All I knew from the moment I opened and closed my eyes was my corporate work. During this year, I was going through a divorce and my father’s cancer relapsed. The imposter syndrome had burnt me out and I needed a break. My role was impacted by a company restructure in 2017 and that was the push I needed, to take a leap of faith. All my belongings were sold within a week and my WRX became my Forester with a DIY platform bed. Within 8-9 months of adventure discovery, I found myself in the hospital for an ulcer burst from stress. I was in the hospital for 5 days, had 2-3 blood transfusion and nearly lost my life from bleeding out during an operation. I had no choice but to return to my corporate work August of 2018. This was when I started dabbling with the idea of integrating my 9-5 with van-life. I started transforming my DIY build Forester into an overland setup. I was experimenting with what I needed vs what I did not need and iterated quickly. On Christmas day of 2018, my father passed away. That was the last push I needed to commit to the travel lifestyle. I completed the set up I needed at the time and hit the road. I took 2 months off and returned to work. When I wasn’t traveling for work, I was living in my Forester working wherever I wanted. Typically, that was in the mountains or nearby coffee shops. I did this from 2019 to 2022. Fast forward to today, I’ve now built two campervans and continue to iterate and learn about the new technology offering to sustain and support any work while living on the road. I’ve started my own campervan rental business, currently in the process of joining a campervan conversion company as their Head of Operations, and occasionally consult for the corporation I’ve worked for in the past. Through my many experimentations, challenges encountered, continued learnings, etc., I would love to expose how I was able to accomplish integrating my 9-5 to van-life, contribute to this community and share what’s next for me.
