Managing Mental Health: Before & After Van Life

Van life and mental health go hand-in-hand frequently in the media. "She moved into a van so she could escape 'adulting'" or "solo van life makes you depressed and lonely" are some of the biggest tropes around.

But what mental shifts are actually going on when someone moves into—or out of—a camper van?

I'm sharing my own experience—the intense imposter syndrome I felt moving into the van, the "I'm a poser that can't hang" when leaving full-time van life, and the freeing realization that all of those feelings are just wasted energy that could go towards something more positive and fulfilling. But...I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't made the leap.

Hilary Bird

Hey! I'm Hilary and I took to the road a few years ago to figure out some life stuff and have new experiences! But I knew I wasn't going to be in the van forever—just needed some solitude and good reflection time. After leaving corporate life, I built out a 1999 Ford E250 and hit the road for nearly two years. In the process, I transitioned to freelance work to support myself and now I'm stationary in Utah where I rent out my van.
