Shane's Story
Shane's journey began in 2017 when he completed his first van conversion and traveled from Canada to Mexico, visiting every National park in the Western States. In 2019, he did his second conversion and has been living in his van full-time ever since. He now spends his days wandering around Europe, enjoying the many different cultures and landscapes it has to offer. Shane particularly adores the mountains and spends a lot of his time climbing, skiing, or paragliding. His van has given him unimaginable freedom, adventure, and access to nature.
From Corporate Life to Van Life
Before embarking on his van life journey, Shane worked a standard 9-5 corporate job as a software engineer. Although his life was fine, he felt overwhelmed by the chaos of modernity and deeply disconnected from nature. He yearned for a simpler life, surrounded by hills, meadows, and forests instead of grey cityscapes.
In December 2018, everything changed for Shane after watching the movie Free Solo, which featured climber Alex Honnold living in his van for nine years. Inspired by Alex's humble, nature-filled existence, Shane made it his New Year's resolution to build a beautiful campervan and start living on the road full-time.
The Van Conversion Journey
Throughout 2019, Shane immersed himself in his van conversion project, quitting his corporate job and taking on freelance gigs to fund his dream. He spent countless hours researching and working late into the night to create his perfect home on wheels. By the end of the year, his van was complete, and he began his full-time van life adventure.
Incredible Memories and Experiences
Since starting his van life journey, Shane has made countless incredible memories. Some highlights include sunny trips along the Mediterranean sea, high-mountain expeditions through the French Alps, and an unforgettable trip to the northernmost tip of Norway.
Financial Logistics of Van Life
Shane quickly discovered that managing finances was an essential aspect of van life. He wanted to work for himself to have ultimate flexibility on the road and has been doing so since moving into his van. Managing expenses and being cautious with money was crucial, as Shane has always been a minimalist and frugal with his finances. His long-term dream was to achieve financial independence and retire early (FIRE), saving and investing a large portion of his income each month.
With years of experience working in fintech, Shane has developed a deep knowledge of finance, which has been invaluable in managing his van life expenses.
Personal Transformation and Helping Others
Shane's transformation from corporate life to life on the road has been incredible, and he's become a completely different person. He wants to help others go through a similar transformation and believes that van life is possible for everyone.
