In 2016, John and Jayme Serbell quit their jobs, sold everything they owned, converted a 1996 Chevy conversion van into a rolling home, and hit the road with their two pups. Because of the lack of van build guidance on the internet at the time, they had to teach themselves everything from insulation to electrical. They created their blog Gnomadhome.com to help others build their vans and live a freeform nomadic lifestyle. After three years crisscrossing the US, John and Jayme posted up on a 40-acre off-grid homestead in northern New Mexico, where they rode out the pandemic and continued to help others with their van builds. Now proud parents of a rambunctious two-year-old, John and Jayme are no longer on the road full time, but they’re still deeply involved in helping others wire their rigs with off-grid solar energy.
