Earning an Income on the Road

When planning to be on the road for the long term, generating income becomes an important aspect of day-to-day life. Most people shy away from living on the road because they cannot conceive of a way to make a living outside of the typical workplace. If you prefer a more traditional job, or if you are having issues with your internet connection that makes working online a challenge, there are other options open to you. For starters, you can always take advantage of seasonal opportunities or engage in part-time jobs.

  • Sports or fitness dance instructor
  • Hospitality jobs, especially in peak seasons. This could include anything from a cook, server, or bartender to a ski instructor or ski lift operator.
  • Retail store jobs
  • Running errands such as dog walking, house sitting etc.
  • Organizing events or parties
  • Part-time healthcare jobs e.g. night shifts
  • Customer service and client support
  • Sales jobs

Here is the deal; there will be times when you have to choose between being on the road and replenishing your dwindling supply of funds. Sure, travel is important, and it is likely the main reason why you want to live on the road in the first place. But what happens when you are faced with expenses and your account balance doesn’t want to cooperate? You slow down and focus on earning. This is when you take regular jobs or concentrate on other sources of income.

Own Projects and Products

You may be more inclined to develop your own creative ways of earning money that are not so dependent on other people. Such systems, more often than not, may include developing your own digital or physical products, or actively selling other company’s products for commission. Much of this can be done online so you need not worry about stocks and storage spaces. Some projects that can earn you a good income while on the road may include the following:

  • Affiliate marketing
  • Paid sponsorships to promote products on own online platforms
  • Online consultancy e.g. accounting, business presentations,
  • Digital products e.g. songs, photos, e-books, training programs, documentaries, guides
  • Own selling platforms such as on eBay or Amazon where you sell products from online companies
  • Selling own artistic products such as paintings, drawings and sketches,
  • Freelance writing

When you are on the road, get involved in the communities where you spend time. This is not only a great way to learn about available opportunities to earn money, but it also helps you learn about the area. Don’t be afraid of staying in one place for a few weeks. You can even take a full-time job for a few months to earn enough to finance the rest of the year. Take some time to relax in one place and enjoy everything that area has to offer. In the end, you will be just like a local!
