Rooftop Fans

Good ventilation is incredibly important for any van conversion, and should not be overlooked. A fan encourages better indoor air quality, moves stale air, reduces moisture buildup, and can help with temperature control. It’s also one of the first, and most, intimidating installations you’ll encounter - as the first step involves cutting a big hole in the roof of your van. Some van-lifers choose to install two fans (one as an intake and the other as an exhaust) for efficient air circulation. Another option is to install a small window or floor vent for the fan to pull fresh air through when in exhaust mode.

Takeaway: You need ventilation in the van, and you need a vent or window to pull fresh air through.

Maxxair fans are among the most popular options out there, offering models that can be operated in any weather conditions and while driving. We recommend the Maxxair MaxxFan Deluxe series due to their built in raincover, powerful fan, and overall good quality.

Example: How to install a rooftop fan

We recommend following the manufacturer’s installation instructions, but here is a quick rundown on the process.

Step 1

Decide on the fan’s location, either front or back of van (or both).

Step 2

Use template or measure cutout size and fastener locations. Mark on the roof.

Step 3

Line the border of the cutout area with painters tape to protect the rest of the van.

Step 4

Drill holes in all four corners, using a bit large enough for jigsaw blade to fit inside.

Step 5

Using the jigsaw and a fine metal blade, connect the four corners to cut out the opening.

Step 6

File the cutout edges until smooth. Apply anti-rust paint, followed by a clear coat to exposed edges.

Step 7

Dry fit the fan, then follow the manufacturer's recommendations for securing and sealing the fan. Usually a mix of butyl tape, self-levelling sealant, and self-tapping screws.
